"Aunt Laul and Uncle John and their family lived on our street, and there was a lot of visiting back and forth. To go there on Friday night with Mother was a real treat for us. Their house was like Grand Central Station. The door was always open, and everyone was welcome at any time.... She and Uncle John were "pushovers for kids," not only their own and their numerous friends, but us and our friends, too. There was a swimming pool on the river near their house, and half the kids on the street used to change clothes at O'Donnell's and go back after swimming, traipse upstairs--often in wet bathing suits, dress and frequently have a snack before going home.2"
