     Clarence Matthew was born circa 1854 at Canada.1 He was the son of James Matthew and Amelia Gates. Clarence appeared on the US Census of 1870 living at Montpelier, Vermont,in the household of his parents, James and Amelia Matthew.1 According to the Federal Census in 1870, Clarence was a farm laborer.1
