Edward J. Gallagher was born on 6 June 1879 at Binghamton, Broome County, New York.1,2,3,4,5 He was the son of Francis Gallagher and Anna Elizabeth Donovan. Edward, age 11 months, appeared on the US Census of 1880 living at 145 Oak Street, Binghamton, Broome County, New York,in the household of his parents, Frank and Anna Elizabeth Gallagher.1 Edward, age 25 years, appeared on the New York State Census of 1905 at Maine, Broome County, New York, with his uncle and aunt, James and Hannah Burns.6 Edward, age 29, appeared on the US Census of 1910 living at 235 Oak Street, Binghamton, Broome County, New York,in the household of his parents, Frank and Anna Elizabeth Gallagher. He was a wholesale shipping clerk.7
Edward J. Gallagher, age 35, married Mary A. Maloney, age 33 , daughter of Michael J. Maloney and Elizabeth E. "Eliza" Allen, on 16 June 1914 at the Church of the Nativity of Our Lord, Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania.
Edward and Mary's wedding announcement of 17 June 1914, reads:
Edward, age 40 years, and Mary, age 38 years, appeared on the US Census of 1920 on 1414 Adams Avenue, Dunmore, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania.11 According to the Federal Census in 1920, Edward was a superintendent at a grocery store.11 Edward, age 50 years, and Mary, age 48 years, appeared on the US Census of 1930 on 1622 Wyoming Avenue, Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. According to the Federal Census in 1930, Edward was an assistant superintendent in a grocery warehouse.10 Edward, age 60 years, and Mary, age 58 years, appeared on the US Census of 1940 on 1622 Wyoming Street, Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania.12 According to the Federal Census in 1940, Edward was a superintendent.12 Edward's obituary of 9 August 1940, reads:
Edward A. Gallagher, 61, native of Binghamton and during the last 25 years assistant general superintendent of the Scranton, Pa., district of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., died at his home in Scranton, Pa., this morning at 6 o'clock.
Among the survivors are two other brothers also prominent in Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea service- -Leo P. Gallagher, Binghamton, superintendent of the Binghamton district. and A. F. Gallagher, Ardmore, Pa., with Great Atlantic & Pacific vice presidential offices at Philadelphia.
Edward Gallagher was born in Oak street, Binghamton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Gallagher. Following graduation from Binghamton Central High school, he became an employee of the Great Atlantic Pacific Tea Co. about 35 years ago. Three years later he accepted advancement in Scranton, and moved to that city, his home since.
He was a member of Scranton trade and business groups and the Scranton Knights of Columbus council.
Mr. Gallagher is survived by his wife, Mary: daughter, Ann M., and one son, Edward, all of Scranton; his mother, Mrs. Anna. E. Gallagher, Binghamton: one sister, Mrs. D. W. Davin, White Plains, and three brothers, Leo P. Gallagher. Binghamton, P. J. Gallagher, Richmond Hill, and A. F. Gallagher, Ardmore, Pa.
Funeral services will be held from St. Paul's Catholic church, Scranton, Monday morning, and burial will follow at Nicholson, Pa.
