  Joseph as a Lieutenant in Brewer's Massachusetts Regiment April through November 1775. He then joined as a First Lieutenant in the 6th Continental Army, and later in the 13th Massachusetts. As a member of Col. Edward Wigglesworth's Regiment, Glover's Brigade, he served at Valley Forge. By 1 January 1778, he was a Captain. He retired from the Continental Army 9 April 1779. He served in the Massachusetts Militia from 1779 to 1780.
