He was the son of Joshua Woodman and Eunice Sawyer. Joseph Woodman was christened on 2 April 1749 at the First Church of Kingston, Kingston, Colony of New Hampshire, by the Rev. Joseph Secom.10

From May 1775 to June 1775, Joseph served in the Militia Company commanded by Moses Merrill of New Gloucester, Massachusetts (Maine). In December 1776, he enlisted in the Company of Militia commanded by Capt. Gordon, Col. Gilman and Major Coffin of Exeter.2,3,15 He enlisted in the Company of Militia commanded by Capt. Gordon, Col.
