Captain John Woodman was born on 24 April 1740 at Kingston, Colony of New Hampshire.2,1,3,4,5,6,7,8,9
He was the son of Joshua Woodman and Eunice Sawyer.1 John was christened on 27 April 1740 at the First Church of Kingston, Kingston, Colony of New Hampshire, by the Rev. Joseph Secomb.10
Captain John Woodman, age 22, married Sarah Page, age 25 , daughter of Nehemiah Page and Mary True, on 21 October 1762 at Hampstead, Colony of New Hampshire.
In 1764 John and Sarah lived at New Gloucester, Province of Massachusetts Bay (Maine), where he was a housewright and a farmer.1,4 Captain John Woodman served circa 1777 as on War Committees in New Gloucester, Massachusetts (Maine.)3 He enlisted 26 February 1777 in Col. Robinson's Regiment. He was commissioned 10 July 1778. He was discharged 31 December 1779.4,14,15
John was mentioned in the will of his father, Joshua Woodman on 27 January 1789 at Kingston, New Hampshire.16,4
He became a leader of a group of townsmen who objected to continued use of their tax money to support an orthodox Congregationalist minister. This was finally settled in 1790 by an act of the Massachusetts General Court. At this time, he and 72 others were incorporated into the Baptist Religious Society of New Gloucester and Gray. While not an ordained minister, John often preached in New Gloucester and near by towns.4 John, appeared on the US Census of 1800 at New Gloucester, Massachusetts (Maine). The enumeration reads:
