William Woods Oakes

     William Woods Oakes was born on 13 October 1883 at McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.^1,2,3 He was the son of James Bruce Oakes and Rachel Anne Beard. William, age 16, appeared on the US Census of 1900 living at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania,in the household of his parents, James Bruce and Rachel Anne Oakes.¹ William Woods Oakes and Grace Helena Rothermel obtained a marriage license on 18 June 1906 at Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.⁴

William Woods Oakes, age 22, married Grace Helena Rothermel, age 18 , daughter of William Irvin Rothermel and Mary Lizzie Welch, on 22 June 1906 at the McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.



William, age 26 years, and Grace Oakes, age 22 years, appeared on the US Census of 1910 at White Deer Township, Union County, Pennsylvania.⁵ According to the Federal Census in 1910, William was a huckster, a term for someone who sells small wares.⁵ William registered for the draft giving his age as 34 and his employer as the Pennsylvania Rail Road on 12 September 1918 at Shamokin Dam, Snyder County, Pennsylvania.³ William, age 46 years, and Grace Oakes, age 42 years, appeared on the US Census of 1930 on State Highway, Shamokin Dam, Snyder County, Pennsylvania.⁶ According to the Federal Census in 1930, William was a machinist.⁶ He died on 10 January 1931 at Mary M. Packer Hospital, McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, at age 47 from septicemia.² William was buried on 13 January 1931 at McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.²
